What of those who stand by and do nothing? Are they guilty of ignorance or callous indifference? Is the western media to blame for showing such little interest where economic interests are not at stake? Or are they merely faithfully representing the real interests of their audiences? Are most cries of shame just cheap outrage that costs the utterer nothing? And worse, is such violence between different groups the norm and diversity and pluralism just the fragile exception?
Darfur seems to be the current crisis of the decade, but follows a sorry history of others.
