Genocide

E-mail Print PDF
(1 rating, issue importance rated 3.00 out of 5)

Genocide is murder behind a slogan, an excuse that allows its perpetrators some protection from the taboos that most humans seem to feel when committing violence on other humans. The slogan makers are surely just as much or more to blame as those who wield the gun, machete or fist or who burn or rape.

What of those who stand by and do nothing? Are they guilty of ignorance or callous indifference? Is the western media  to blame for showing such little interest where economic interests are not at stake? Or are they merely faithfully representing the real interests of their audiences? Are most cries of shame just cheap outrage that costs the utterer nothing? And worse, is such violence between different groups the norm and diversity and pluralism just the fragile exception?

Darfur seems to be the current crisis of the decade, but follows a sorry history of others.

Some possibly not balanced but informative links include:

What are the best ways of fighting genocide? What political correctnesses need to be abandoned? What honesty is required before an effective start can be made?
